Climate
The island of Newfoundland enjoys summers that average a temperature between 10 and 20 Celsius. The winters are surprisingly mild by Canadian standards, between 0 and –5 Celsius, though with a high rate of precipitation. Newfoundland’s climate can best be described as moderate and maritime.

Currency
Financial institutions will provide credible exchange rates while converting to the Canadian Dollar. Most local businesses use cash only.
There is a major Canadian bank (ScotiaBank) in town capable of converting most international currencies, bank machines capable of making international transactions are also available 24 hours a day.

Goods and Service Tax Rebate
On September 25, 2006, the Government of Canada announced the elimination of the GST Visitors’ Rebate Program effective April 1, 2007 as part of a package of spending restraint measures.

Health Insurance
Canadian hospital and medical services are excellent.
It is recommended that visitors to Canada obtain traveler’s health insurance before leaving their country because health insurance plans often do not extend coverage for services received outside the country of residence.
Twillingate boasts a 49 bed, modern hospital.
Icebergs
Although not officially sanctioned, Twillingate is locally described as, “The Iceberg Capital of the World”. Positioned within the “Iceberg Alley”, Twillingate is one of Newfoundland’s prime locations for spotting and touring the many giants that break off the ice cap in Baffin Island. Mid May to Mid July is often considered the prime season for viewing icebergs.
Water
The tap water at The Ocean View Retreat is amongst the cleanest in the world and very safe to drink. Sourced with a personal artesian spring well, the water quality at The Ocean View Retreat is professionally monitored and maintained.
Whales
The many tour operators of Twillingate specialize in providing you with a comfortable and safe environment for viewing both icebergs and whales. The many whale species that migrate to Newfoundland take advantage of the abundant feeding grounds before going to more southerly destinations in the winter. It is very common to see a wide variety of species from May to as late as November.
